parshat shavua shiurim: Parshas Chukas (Rabbi Sedley): "This week's Torah reading contains the death of Aharon, the high priest and the brother of Moshe. The Midrash (Tanna d'vei Eliyahu chap. 12) contrasts the Torah's description of the death of Aharon with the description of the death of Moshe. When Aharon dies the Torah says, ' And they wept for Aharon thirty days, the entire house of Israel' (Numbers 20; 29). However at the time of the death of Moshe the Torah says 'The Children of Israel wept for Moshe in the plains of Moav for thirty days' (Deuteronomy 34; 8). There was greater mourning for Aharon ('The entire house...') than for Moshe, because Moshe was the judge, the strict lawgiver, who would reprimand the people for their misconduct. Emunah
Emunah
is the spiritual state associated with the inner experience of the highest of the three "heads" of keter, the Reisha d'lo Ityada ("the unknowable head").
Emunah is the essential connection, or "covenant," between Israel and God.
In Chassidut we find the saying that the "simple faith" (emunah peshutah) of the "simple Jew" (yehudi pashut) links him to the "simple (absolute) unity" (achdut peshutah) of God's Atzmut (Essence, above the revelation of His infinite light, or en sof ).
Every Jewish soul inherits its faith from the patriarchs and matriarchs of the Jewish people in general, and from Abraham, the "first believer," ...
